Ketika kucing kamu melahirkan, tentu ikut bahagia dong! Seperti halnya memiliki anak sendiri, kamu pasti akan merasakan debaran yang sama. Jumlah dan warna kucing yang lahir pun kamu pasti sudah hafal.
Tetapi setelah ditinggal, betapa kamu terkejut ketika jumlah anak kucing itu berkurang! Padahal tidak ada bekas darah sama sekali. Lalu kemanakah kucing malang itu? Usut punya usut, ternyata induk kucing punya kecenderungan memakan anaknya sendiri.
Dan sudah banyak orang paham mengenai fakta itu. Pertanyaannya, mengapa induk kucing memakan anaknya sendiri? Padahal itu anaknya sendiri lho! Kok tega ya?
Apapun alasannya, pasti tetap ada hal masuk akal di dalamnya. Karena kucing punya insting sendiri yang menuntunnya untuk melangkah. Tetapi beberapa alasan ini mungkin bisa menjadi kemungkinan terbaik.

Menjamin Keselamatan Anak
Karakter anak kucing baru lahir itu berbeda-beda. Ada yang memiliki fisik kuat sehingga mampu bertahan hidup. Tetapi ada pula yang sejak lahir memiliki kondisi fisik lemah.
Induk pasti mampu memahami kondisi ini. Daripada harus merawat anak dengan harapan hidup rendah, alih-alih induk lebih memilih untuk memakannya saja. Lagipula anak itu berasal dari tubuh induk pula. Yang kemudian nanti akan berubah menjadi energi.
Hamil Terlalu Muda
Kucing pun terkadang mengalami kondisi hamil terlalu muda. Naluri untuk menjadi induk belum terbentuk dengan sempurna. Singkat kata, kucing belum siap menjadi seekor induk.
Karena emosi kucing belum stabil, suara anak kucing bukan menumbuhkan sisi keibuan dan justru membangkitkan naluri berburu. Alhasil induk itu akan makan anaknya sendiri.
Dalam Kondisi Kelangkaan Makanan
Satu hal yang harus dilakukan induk saat telah melahirkan adalah menyusui anaknya. Butuh energi untuk memberi susu pada anak-anak kucing. Bila sedang terjadi kelangkaan makanan, susu kucing tidak akan terbentuk.
Nah, untuk mengurangi beban tersebut induk akan makan anaknya sendiri. Sehingga air susu itu akan keluar lagi untuk menyusui anak-anak lainnya.
Anak Kucing Telah Mati
Kucing lahir tidak selalu dalam kondisi sehat. Beberapa bahkan lahir dalam kondisi mati. Saat mendapati kondisi ini, induk akan segera memakan anak itu. Karena induk akan khawatir bila kucing yang telah mati itu akan menyebarkan penyakit kepada anak lain yang masih hidup.
Induk Merasa Stres
Induk kucing pun bisa merasa stres. Terlebih ketika melahirkan di musim yang salah. Misalnya melahirkan di musim dingin. Sangat berat untuk merawat anak di musim dingin.
Supaya tidak stres dalam merawat anaknya di jalanan, induk lebih memilih membunuh anaknya saja. Lalu akan melahirkan kembali pada musim yang tepat.
Tidak Mengenali Anak
Satu cara kucing untuk mengenali satu sama lain yakni dengan mencium baunya. Kalau kamu terlalu sering menyentuh kucing baru lahir, kemungkinan bau kucing akan tercampur.
Kalau sudah berganti baunya, ada kemungkinan induk tidak mengenali anaknya. Alhasil induk itu menjadi tidak mengenali anaknya sendiri.
Meskipun terdengar kejam, tetapi memang hal itu terjadi. Kamu bisa kok sedikit membantu kucing agar tidak memakan anaknya sendiri. Pastikan rawat ia dengan baik agar tidak kekurangan makanan.
Dan kawinkan kucing ketika sudah masuk usia matang agar tidak hamil terlalu muda.
